Los Prismas Basálticos - BAJA, MX

Citlali joined me for a final adventure before I crossed back North of the Wall to start my ski season. We went to do a short hike to check out the Prismas Basálticos formations near the town of Comondú. We knew where the rocks were but did not know where the trailhead started or where to park my car. Luckily, we saw some ranchers nearby and stopped to ask for directions. After a short hike, we got to the base of the hill and then galloped up to take a closer look and crawl around.

I took many photos and flew the drone for a bit. There were many basalt columns that formed towers and caves and it was a gorgeous scene to stare at and climb around on. The cerro across the stream also was a sight to behold! Basalt Columns are all over the world (such as in Iceland and the Devil’s Postpile in Cali) and form when lava flows cool in this unique hexagonal manner.

We eventually got packed up and then returned to Comondú to get some intel on the road that connects it to Loreto. Turns out, the road was intense and more of a Jeep rock-crawler road and would likely be impassable for my modest Subaru. This meant we would have to take a big loop around but at least we caught a fire sunset at camp!

Citlali hopped on a bus in Loreto to head back home to La Paz and I continued my journey back to the land of the snow. I stopped at one of my favorite spots that I discovered on my return trip the previous year. The ruins of a few houses line a 40ft cliff in a tiny little bay that looks out towards a few small islands. I posted up here for the night and took some more fantastic drone shots.

It is always rough going through my transitions to a new location for the changing seasons, sports, and friends. I love Mexico and I will be back!
