ICELAND 1: Reykjavik, The South Shore, & Puffins

My friend, Kyle, AKA Sunshyne, has been going to Brazilian Jui Jitsu camps in Iceland and absolutely loves the country… So much so that he planned to propose to his girlfirend, Larissa, on the island and he wanted friends and family around to celebrate the big moment. He put together an itinerary for a long weekend and I planned to stay a bit longer and do some solo exploring / hiking. If I’m spending all the time and effort to travel there, I’m spending at least two weeks in the country!

South Shore Tour

A very popular day tour that goes along the country’s only major highway, Ring Road, that circles the island. This highlights a few stops along the southern bit of the island, including the famous Skogafoss Waterfall, Reysnisfjara Black Sand Beach, the Solheimajokull Glacier, and the Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

PUFFINS!

Most of the squad departed and before Kyle and Larissa continued their Eurotour, we went on a Puffin watching boat ride to the nearby island of Akurey, a puffin sanctuary just north of Reykjavik. Fun fact - their wingspan to bodyweight ratio is very poor which means they have to flap their wings like crazy to fly!

Misc

We explored Reykjavik, went on many scooter rides around town, had a drunken night at the Big Lebowski themed bar, and took a spa day at the gorgeous Sky Lagoon where Kyle popped the question, she said yes, many celebrations ensued.
