TBT South Loop to Sedona, AZ - Part 2 - (May 23 - 26, 2022)

I heard of this spot known as “The Crack” which is a four mile hike up Wet Beaver Creek. It was worth it! I did my first gainer flip and enjoyed jumping for a few hours.

After my last trip to Sedona I knew I’d be back. Only this time I was driving and got to see some pretty sights along the way from Colorado. One memorable pitstop was Treasure Falls, which was gushing from recent snowmelt, especially when compared to the last time I saw it on my CDT Hike.

Paddling Muddy Creek (June 11, 2023)

This creek is usually a hiking trail and the last time it had enough water to paddle was 2019! This winter's epic snow pack was more than enough to change that and Aaron and I did not want to miss this opportunity.

Mainland Mexico: Amatlán (May 21 - May 29, 2023)

Quetzalcoatl celebrations, small mountain villages, and scrambly hikes up to big holes in the side of the cliffs! Amatlán, Mexico (about 90 minutes south of Mexico City) was a true gem to explore!

The Minturn Mile, a long backcountry route that follows a stream bed from Vail Resort to the neighboring town of Minturn. We hit some of the best, fresh, lines of the season on the way down and it was absolutely spectacular…until I dropped my GoPro in the deep powder.

Labyrinth Canyon / Green River Packraft Excursion (May 5-7, 2023)

This section of the Green River usually flows around 6,000 CFS (cubic feet per second) but with the fantastic snow year that the West experienced, it was rocking at 26,000 CFS! The lack of effort required to move meant this trip would be more of a booze cruise than an intense, multi-day river paddle full of rapids. ENJOY THE VIEWS!

BAJA 9) Balandra Bay V2.0 and Hiking around Todos Santos

At the end of the hike there is an abandoned cannery structure that was rapidly decaying. I loved all of the geometrical shapes of the columns and shadows from the high sun so I took plenty of pictures and flew the drone. As I was setting up a drone shot, I got a little too close to a pillar and crashed it

BAJA 8) Whale Sharks, Island Tours, and NYE

Despite being a massive shark, the largest of the species, they are completely harmless. They filter feed on plankton, don’t have teeth, and their throats are only the size of a soccer ball. They also have terrible vision and huge blind spots so a few times they turn and are directed right at you with their giant mouths open wide and gulping in water!

BAJA 7) Climbing, Go-Karts, More Snorkeling

On low-wind days I would travel from La Ventana, over the mountain to La Paz, and explore these other activities. On one of my trips, we hiked around the famous Balandra Bay and then snorkeled near an old fishing camp.

BAJA 6) Cabo Pulmo: Amazing Snorkeling, Fresh Fish, and an Exploding Grill

Cabo Pulmo is protected marine park with world renowned diving and it was only a two hour drive from La Ventana. So this was naturally the best choice. We found an amazing campsite at the base of a rocky crag that jutted out into the sea. I took some drone shots of us as we climbed

BAJA 5) Settling down: Cerritos and La Ventana

The gang regrouped in La Paz for a house party that our dive master invited us to. It was a great time with lots of tequila and then Daniel gave me a lift on his scooter to get tacos at 2a.m. I then went up to La Ventana to see what this kiteboarding thing was about. I was blown away! (pun intended)

BAJA 4) El Picacho - Hiking the Tallest Peak in BCS

In quite a random turn of events, a rugby teammate was in town for a wedding and suggested that we go hike the tallest peak in Baja California Sur. It was an 18 mile hike, with 5000ft of elevation gain over six miles, and we camped in a meadow up top.

BAJA 3) Kayaking in Mangroves and SCUBA Diving with Sea Lions

We camped right next to the water and went for a morning paddle in the mangroves. We found a long skinny tunnel we set to explore but it eventually became impassable and we had to turn around. We also cleaned up tons of plastic from the beach and hauled it away in the van.

BAJA 2) Bahía Concepción

After watching another gorgeous sunset and then seeing dozens of birds go fishing, we made the short drive to the bay and wow was it gorgeous. We stopped at Playa Santispac which had a lot of RVs lining the shoreline and then we went for a kayak/paddleboard trip around an island and to a beach accessible only by water.

BAJA 1) Road Trip through the North

The shoulder seasons in Colorado aren’t very fun. It gets too cold to hike or bike but there is not enough snow to go skiing. I have spent two winters as a ski bum, some summers as a hiking bum, but I had yet to be a beach bum!

Moab Take 2 (April 3 - 7, 2022)

I decided to do a sprint through Arches NP at dusk and capture the golden hour light. Also, this timing worked for me because Arches rolled out a reservation system for the popular daytime hours. With limited time, I did the usual tourist thing of parking, taking some pics, and driving to the next parking lot

The canyon got narrower, the walls grew taller, and the water became deeper and more swift. We then got to a narrow slow with a six foot waterfall dropping down to rocks below. It looked completely impassable without ropes and gear but luckily there was a secret cave to bypass it.

It was pretty cool going on a mountain bike ride in the desert one day, followed by skiing the slopes in the Utah mountains the next. I hiked up Jupiter Peak, the tallest in Park City standing at 9,998ft… so just over 10k at my head height!
